The wind whipped at our heels, the rain
lashed at our faces as we three hardened Villans made our way to B6, Aston,
Villa Park to be precise, the home of Aston Villa FC. Well that was the plan, until we found out
that no trains were running from our station this weekend. Ahh, panic!! A mercy
dash to Brixton ensued and via the Victoria Line, we made our train –
just. A day out to the football is generally
a fairly epic affair, being an eleven-hour day, door to door and with a team
like Villa, an emotional rollercoaster is often the way it goes. Buoyed by
blind loyalty and fresh hope for the day, nothing could stop us – we were on
our way. Today’s game was of huge importance and for the first time in a long
while, the crowd was unbelievable – loyal, stoic, partisan, believing and loud,
spurring the team on. No discontent, no scapegoats, full on backing. We went
behind, we took the lead, we lost the lead and we found the extra strength to
win the game. Noah could barely look for the last five minutes and the game was
alive until the final kick. The elation on winning was extreme.
Today is the first Villa victory myself and the boys have witnessed in eleven
matches. There really is no other feeling like it, which is why we go on crazy
round trips to Birmingham or travel to away games every few weeks, in the hope
of recapturing that moment, that feeling, again and again…
(Check today’s Daily Tune for a rare soul classic to sum up the feeling of positivity and elation…)
