My
youngest son regularly gets homework where he is given a list of spellings and aside from
learning the words, he has to write a short story which uses as many of the words
on the list as possible. Standing outside a newsagent’s this morning, I looked at
the assembled newspaper headlines and thought you could play a similar game. The
key words I picked out were surveillance,
coke, plague, dementia, sharks, charity, burglars, dealing and fail. Every single word is hugely negative – even charity
was part of a negative headline, but this is the daily newsfeed we are given - scaremongering, intimidation and the mobilization of united rage. I
would far rather read my son’s interpretation of his spellings than the daily propaganda. In fact, I wonder what he would have come up with had he been given today’s top news
words? Probably something along the lines of, 'a forgetful shark watched some burglars
very closely to stop them being bad. He wanted to give all the money they had stolen to charity and to stop the evil wizard Lord Hiccup from spreading the plague. The shark and his mates then had a massive party and drank loads of a popular soft drink. Hoorah!!' Far more fun than the papers…
