First trip to the seaside today. We started
in Margate, taking in the Turner Contemporary Museum where there was a set of
sculptures by an artist called Juan Munoz which were very good, like sad
looking cast iron Weebles. Margate seems to be one of those seaside towns that
has let itself go and got a bit run down. There used to be a Scooby Doo
rollercoaster in a place called Dreamland. Not anymore, Dreamland has been put
out of its misery. We parked at Morrison’s and the people in the shop generally
appeared fairly brow beaten and jaded but a series of vintage shops around the corner, tell a different story and along with the art gallery, there
is new money coming in. We then went to Broadstairs. What a beach!! We usually
visit Broadstairs at least once a year and this time we were meeting friends
who have left London and have moved not too far from Broadstairs. There are
few truer song lyrics than “Oh I do like to be beside the seaside.” As is
tradition, we finished up in Ramsgate and Peter’s Fish Factory, where we sat
outside eating our grub. We put a series of piercing screams down to either a
small child or a distressed seagull. It transpired a domestic had kicked off outside
a bar down the road. Before you could say Jeremy Kyle, three police vans were
on the scene, as hoards of relatively obese rubber neckers gawped at the drama
unfolding before them. All in a day at the seaside…
