Head Space Daily Words...
Today I was working in Golden Square which is close to Piccadilly Circus, Soho and Regent Street. It is a good location, plenty of history in the area and lots to interest us media types. Apparently Golden Square was originally called Gelding Square, which is a word I have looked up and a gelding is a castrated horse!! I don't think the square would have been quite so happening in those days. I can only imagine the bellows of terror as these poor animals had their nuts chopped off. Anyway, final Golden Square fact of the evening comes from a website called The Shady Lady, which says that the statue in the square was won by accident at an auction, when a friend of the auctioneer nodded a greeting which was mistaken for a bid. The price was so low that the guy who won it donated the statue, which is reputed to be of George the Second, (if it can't be determined who the statue is of, it must be pretty bad,) to the residents of the Square, which is where it has stood ever since. So there you have it. History lesson over...
