Today was our street party. The sun was
shining, the kids had fun, there was food a plenty and the beer was flowing.
Some interesting characters live on our street. There is a couple who met in
the 1950s in Golders Green – a Pakistani man and a Spanish woman - a really lovely
couple. The guy always wears a cap and cardigan and loves to tell you a tale or
two about Pakistan and that he can bowl a googly. There is an elderly couple
that has lived here for fifty years and another lady who has been here for
fifty-five years. People seem to lay their roots down in our street. Perhaps we
will do likewise. Another fantastic couple lives over the road from us. The guy
rides a motorbike which his wife rides pillion and they have been known to do
this all the way to the south of France, with her falling asleep, holding around
her husband’s waist, her helmet tapping against his back like a woodpecker on a
tree. They moved to the street the year I was born, in 1973. He is big into his
music and loves the Rolling Stones. They recently saw them play the O2 but even
better than that, they saw them play their first ever gig, at Lewisham Odeon in
1962. The Stones were supporting Little Richard and Bo Diddley and everyone in
the crowd walked out before the Everly Brothers, who were top of the bill, took
to the stage. Another story is that when he was working on construction sites
in the 1970s, the Unions had an incredible amount of power, so much so that
when Keith Moon died, the shop steward at the company he was working for, called
a half day strike in respect of Moon the Loon’s passing. I could listen to him for hours…
