In my younger, hedonistic party days, I was
all about dance music and clubs. The thought of spending four days in a field,
unwashed, with basic toilet facilities held no appeal whatsoever. These days,
with my music tastes having broadened, as well as the experience of many family
camping trips, I am primed to attend my first major festival. This Thursday
sees me and the family head off to Green Man in the Brecon Beacons, on the
Welsh border.
There is quite a posse of us going, with
two former London families and a sizeable group from Bristol forming a convoy
to what will be a weekend of music, fun and hopefully good times. Much may
depend on the weather, as a long weekend spent living in mud will not be
pleasant, plus our tent is past its sell by date, now being prone to leaking in
heavy rain. However, wellies have been acquired and hopefully, all will be
good.
My eldest son, who is not a major music
fan, has a few reservations about the whole thing but after looking at the Green
Man website today, he is coming round to the idea, with the Einstein’s Garden
area looking a good location to hang out. You never know, attending Green Man could be a
life defining moment for him. My youngest on the other hand is more into his
music and is particularly looking forward to seeing Courtney Barnett. There will
be plenty going on, with lots to entertain the youngsters, a
cinema, loads of places to eat and drink and the thought of sharing a stretch of
Welsh countryside with 20,000 other like minded individuals, is mind blowing.
My own excitement levels are rising now.
Just three days at work, then the journey begins. The acts I most want to see
are: Atomic Bomb! The Music Of William Onyeabor and Natalie Prass on Friday; Charles
Bradley and his Extraordinaires and Songhoy Blues on Saturday; and on Sunday,
Matthew E White and Courtney Barnett will round things off nicely – (not to
mention Hot Chip, Sun Ra Arkestra, Teleman, Emmy The Great, The Fall, Jane
Weaver, St.Vincent and Pubic Service Broadcasting, should the opportunity to
stumble across any of these performances arise!!) Check out today's Head Space Daily
Tune for a tasty little selection...
